Regional overview
Temple Basin is the high tussock basin above SH73 just west of Arthur’s Pass summit. The walking character is open, alpine, and weather-exposed from the start: the main track begins above the bushline at the Temple Basin car park and climbs steeply to the ski-club buildings and Lockwood day shelter.
Because the basin itself has only one maintained public access track, this entry covers the immediate pass cluster around Temple Basin car park, Arthur’s Pass summit, Dobson Nature Walk, Otira Valley, and the connecting Arthur’s Pass Walking Track. These routes are close enough to work as a coherent Main Divide day-walk set, but the alpine routes above Temple Basin shelter remain outside the normal day-hike scope unless treated as unmarked alpine tramping.
The normal walking season is late spring to autumn, with alpine flowers often noted by DOC from November to February. Winter and spring bring avalanche risk, ski-area avalanche control, snow-covered route lines, and possible closures or operational restrictions around the ski field. Check DOC, the Arthur’s Pass Visitor Centre, and Temple Basin ski-area information before departure.
Selection rationale
These five hikes combine the essential Temple Basin access route with the adjacent pass and valley walks that make the area a useful day-hiking base: Dobson Nature Walk, Arthur’s Pass Walking Track, Otira Valley Track, and the classic Avalanche Peak day summit. The selection avoids promoting unmarked Temple Basin alpine continuations as standard day hikes.

1. Temple Basin Track to Lockwood Day Shelter
Snapshot
Itinerary
From the SH73 Temple Basin car park, the track zigzags steeply above the bushline through open tussock and rocky ground. It climbs to the ski-club buildings and the Lockwood day shelter in Temple Basin, with views across the valley to Mount Rolleston/Kaimatau.
The marked track finishes at the shelter. Above this point there is no marked route; the surrounding basins, ridges, and cols are alpine tramping or mountaineering terrain.
Why it is essential
Temple Basin Track is the defining walk of the basin and the most direct way to reach an alpine ski-field setting on foot from SH73. It is short, steep, open, and representative of the Main Divide’s above-bushline terrain.
Equipment
- Mountain hiking equipment: sturdy boots, waterproof shell, warm layer, water, food, sun protection, map/GPS, and navigation backup.
- Trekking poles are useful on the steep, rocky descent.
- In snow or ski-season conditions, check ski-area operations and avalanche conditions; avalanche gear and skills are required if entering avalanche terrain.
Hazards and notes
- DOC states there is complex avalanche terrain beyond the shelter.
- The track is exposed to rapid mountain weather because it starts above the bushline.
- Temple Basin ski area may operate from late June to late October, with avalanche control work and closures possible.
- No dogs are allowed.

2. Dobson Nature Walk and Arthur’s Pass Lookout
Snapshot
Itinerary
From the Temple Basin car park, follow the short interpretive track across the road and through subalpine plants, herbs, tussock, shrubs, and flower habitats. The walk finishes opposite the Dobson Memorial near the pass lookout; return the same way.
Why it is essential
Dobson Nature Walk is the shortest official way to read the ecology of the Temple Basin pass environment. It links the car park, Arthur’s Pass summit, alpine plants, and the historic Dobson Memorial in a compact stop.
Equipment
- Standard hiking equipment: sturdy shoes, warm layer, raincoat, water, and sun protection.
- Carry extra warm clothing even for a short walk; the pass can be windy and cold.
Hazards and notes
- The route is short but exposed to fast weather changes at the pass.
- Take care crossing SH73 between track sections.
- No dogs are allowed.

3. Arthur’s Pass Walking Track
Snapshot
Itinerary
The track can be started from Punchbowl car park, Bealey Chasm/Jacks Hut, or Temple Basin car park. From Punchbowl, it climbs through beech forest to the Bridal Veil Falls lookout, crosses Bridal Veil Creek, passes through shrublands and wetlands to Jacks Hut, then continues through old-growth beech and links with the Dobson Nature Walk near the pass.
Return by the same track. DOC states the highway is unsafe to walk on and should not be used as a return route.
Why it is essential
This is the main low-level connector between Arthur’s Pass village, Jacks Hut, the pass, and Temple Basin car park. It combines waterfalls, wetlands, heritage, forest, and mountain views without entering the more serious summit routes.
Equipment
- Standard hiking equipment: sturdy shoes, warm layer, waterproof shell, food, water, sun protection, and map/GPS.
- Add a headtorch if starting late or combining with side tracks.
Hazards and notes
- Some steps are steep near Bridal Veil Creek.
- Mountain weather changes quickly.
- Use the track rather than SH73 for walking links.
- No dogs are allowed.

4. Otira Valley Track to Footbridge
Snapshot
Itinerary
The track climbs over old glacial moraine, then contours through subalpine scrub and tussock under the northern flank of Mount Rolleston/Kaimatau. The marked track ends at the Otira River footbridge.
Return by the same route. Continuing beyond the footbridge requires map reading, route-finding, and alpine experience; it is not part of this day-hike entry.
Why it is essential
Otira Valley is the most accessible alpine valley walk from the Temple Basin pass area. It gives immediate views into a deep Main Divide valley without committing to unmarked mountaineering terrain.
Equipment
- Mountain hiking equipment: sturdy boots, rain shell, warm layer, food, water, sun protection, map/GPS, and navigation backup.
- Trekking poles are useful on rocky and wet sections.
- Snow-covered conditions require snow travel and avalanche judgement.
Hazards and notes
- DOC warns of challenging avalanche terrain to the footbridge and complex avalanche terrain beyond it.
- Avalanche danger is specifically noted from May to November.
- The route above the bushline needs good visibility.
- No dogs are allowed.

5. Avalanche Peak Track and Scotts Track Loop
Snapshot
Itinerary
Climb from Arthur’s Pass village on the steep Avalanche Peak Track to the bushline, then follow yellow poles over the exposed ridge and scree sections to the summit. Descend on Scotts Route and Scotts Track, following orange poles to SH73 and the Punchbowl car park area.
Why it is essential
Although outside Temple Basin itself, Avalanche Peak is the essential Main Divide day summit for walkers based around Arthur’s Pass village and the pass. It gives a high view back toward Temple Basin, Mount Rolleston, and the surrounding ridges.
Equipment
- Mountain hiking equipment plus emergency shelter, headtorch, navigation backup, extra food, and distress beacon.
- Winter or snow conditions require ice axe, crampons, avalanche safety gear, and appropriate skills.
Hazards and notes
- DOC notes fatalities on this route and warns against poor visibility or high winds.
- Hazards include avalanche, snow/ice, rockfall, steep drop-offs, and navigation problems.
- No dogs are allowed.
