Regional overview

Los Nevados is Colombia’s classic high volcanic Andes region: wax-palm valleys, cloud forest, paramo, glacial lakes, superparamo and active volcano landscapes around Nevado del Ruiz, Nevado Santa Isabel, Nevado del Tolima, Paramillo del Quindio and Laguna del Otun. Parques Nacionales lists the park as open, but all entry to the protected area must be coordinated with an authorised REPSE guide/operator, and each sector has its own quotas, hours, minimum ages, seasonal closures and volcanic-risk rules.

The hiking is high-altitude and weather-sensitive. Routes may start near 2,400-4,100 m and several reach 4,000-4,800 m. The catalogue excludes technical glacier or summit climbing and treats route-source GPX lines as references only.

Selection rationale

The selection balances the internationally famous Cocora wax-palm valley, the Laguna del Otun paramo wetland, a Santa Isabel / Laguna Verde high-lake route, the official Nevado del Ruiz Brisas-Kumanday high-volcano corridor, and the Tolima-side Termales del Canon / Laguna Vancouver hike. Multi-day traverses and glacier ascents are excluded.

Itinerary

This high route crosses the Laguna del Otun sector of Los Nevados, moving through paramo wetlands toward the largest lake in the park and high views toward Nevado Santa Isabel. The catalogue version should stay on authorised non-technical walking terrain and not continue onto the glacier unless the trip is explicitly operated as a mountaineering outing.

Why it is essential

Laguna del Otun is the central wetland and lake landscape of Los Nevados: frailejones, high water, volcanic ridges and views toward Santa Isabel.

Equipment

  • Full high-mountain day kit
  • Waterproof/warm layers
  • Gloves/hat
  • Food/water
  • Headtorch
  • Guide/operator
  • Navigation

Hazards and notes

  • Altitude.
  • Cold.
  • Fog.
  • Boggy paramo.
  • Glacier-proximity risks.

The route heads from the authorised high sector toward Laguna Verde, one of the non-technical high-lake options listed by Parques Nacionales for the Cisne-Poleka Kasue area. It gives close contact with paramo and superparamo without requiring a glacier crossing.

Why it is essential

Laguna Verde represents the Santa Isabel side of Los Nevados: high-lake terrain, volcanic rock, paramo vegetation and snow-peak views when clear.

Equipment

  • Warm waterproof kit
  • Boots
  • Sun protection
  • Food/water
  • Authorised guide/operator
