Regional overview
This region is centred on the dramatic cut of Tiger Leaping Gorge between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain, with Haba Village and the Haba massif forming the high, quieter northern side of the walking area. Hiking ranges from busy gorge paths and cliff descents to high-altitude Haba approaches above 4,000 m.
Access status is a major issue. TrekYunnan and Chinese media reposts report that Haba Snow Mountain hiking and mountaineering operations were suspended from 21 October 2025, with reopening time to be announced. Haba entries below are therefore retained as essential conditional routes, not as currently open recommendations. Tiger Leaping Gorge also has changing local restrictions on lower gorge side trails; current local guidance is required.
The best normal walking seasons are March-May and October-November. Summer heat and rain increase dehydration, landslide, and slippery-path risk. Haba’s upper routes involve altitude, cold, snow, and, above base camp, mountaineering terrain; summit routes are excluded from this day-hike catalogue.
Selection rationale
The selection balances the famous gorge high trail, a shorter high-trail section, the exposed Middle Gorge descent, and the two most important non-summit Haba mountain day routes. Because Haba access is currently reported suspended, those two entries are marked as conditional and should not be used without legal reopening confirmation.

1. Tiger Leaping Gorge High Trail
Snapshot
Itinerary
The route climbs from the Qiaotou/Hutiaoxia side to the high path above the Jinsha River, passes Naxi village terrain and the 28 Bends ascent, then traverses above the gorge towards Halfway/Tea Horse guesthouse country. It continues along balcony paths, waterfall gullies, and exposed viewpoints before descending towards Tina’s Guesthouse / Walnut Garden.
Why it is essential
This is one of China’s most famous walking routes: a classic Hengduan gorge traverse with Haba Snow Mountain on one side, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain on the other, and the Jinsha River far below.
Equipment
Mountain hiking shoes, sun protection, water, food, waterproof shell, warm layer, cash for local fees/guesthouses, offline map, and headtorch.
Hazards and notes
Heat, dehydration, landslides, narrow path sections, loose rock, and occasional route changes are the main hazards. Full-route one-day attempts are strenuous; fit walkers commonly shorten the day by starting higher or split the trail over two days.

2. Tiger Leaping Gorge via Half Trail
Snapshot
Itinerary
This shorter high-trail section samples the balcony path and gorge views without committing to the full Qiaotou-to-Tina’s traverse. It is best treated as a legal, locally advised section from one of the high-trail guesthouse access points towards Tina’s or the road.
Why it is essential
It provides a realistic day-hike option for walkers who want the High Trail’s best scenery but cannot safely complete the full traverse in one day.
Equipment
Standard hiking equipment, plus sun protection, water, grippy shoes, cash, and offline map.
Hazards and notes
Confirm the exact start and end with local guesthouses or drivers, as informal shortcuts and road works can change access. Do not enter closed lower-gorge side trails.

3. Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge - Teacher Zhang Trail / Sky Ladder
Snapshot
Itinerary
From Tina’s or Zhang’s area, the route descends steeply towards the river and Tiger Leaping Stone using one of the locally maintained paths, then returns by the Sky Ladder, Teacher Zhang Trail, or another open route. Some variants are privately maintained and fee-based.
Why it is essential
This route gives the most dramatic close contact with the gorge bottom, rapids, and cliff architecture, contrasting with the high trail above.
Equipment
Grippy shoes, water, sun protection, waterproof layer, small daypack, and hands-free setup for ladders/steep sections.
Hazards and notes
Exposure is real. The Sky Ladder is very steep and can be vertigo-inducing. Route access has changed in recent years and some lower-gorge routes may require local guides or be closed for safety. Do not enter closed ladders or paths.

4. Haba Snow Mountain Base Camp from Haba Village
Snapshot
Itinerary
The route climbs from Haba Village through cultivated slopes, forest, rhododendron, and open high pasture to the base camp near treeline. It stops at base camp and does not continue onto the glacier or summit route.
Why it is essential
When legally open, this is the main non-summit way to experience Haba Snow Mountain’s high alpine terrain and the gateway to the massif without committing to mountaineering.
Equipment
Mountain hiking equipment, boots, warm/windproof layers, waterproof shell, trekking poles, food, water, headtorch, navigation backup, gloves/hat, and traction if snow/ice is reported.
Hazards and notes
This route should not be attempted while Haba hiking/mountaineering activities are suspended. Above base camp, the summit route becomes mountaineering and is excluded. Altitude, cold, storms, snow, and route-finding are serious issues.

5. Haba Snow Mountain - Black Lake
Snapshot
Itinerary
The route climbs from the Haba access side towards the high alpine basin of Black Lake. TrekYunnan describes Black Lake as about two hours from base camp in normal operation; the full out-and-back from lower access is a very strenuous high-altitude day.
Why it is essential
Black Lake is the major non-summit alpine-lake objective on Haba Snow Mountain, representing the massif’s glacial-lake and high-pasture landscape.
Equipment
Full mountain hiking equipment, boots, warm layers, waterproof/windproof shell, gloves/hat, headtorch, trekking poles, navigation backup, food, water, and traction where snow/ice is present.
Hazards and notes
Do not attempt during the reported access suspension. The route is long, high, and remote, with limited services, weather exposure, and possible snow. It is not a substitute for the mountaineering summit route and should not continue onto glacier terrain.
