Regional overview
The Ordos upland margins are not a single formal hiking park but a set of plateau, desert, canyon and Yellow River edge landscapes around Ordos, the Mu Us/Kubuqi deserts and the loess-border valleys toward Shaanxi. Hiking character is desert-canyon walking, dune-edge traverses, reservoir/wetland margins and Yellow River cliff viewpoints.
The best source-backed natural walking area in this pass is Salawusu, where official Ordos sources describe the Salawusu Tourist Area, Ordos Man site, Batuwan area and a large desert valley/canyon landscape. The Kubuqi Desert provides recognised desert-trekking terrain, but most route sources are commercial or crowd-sourced rather than official public GPX.
Season is spring and autumn, with summer heat and winter cold as major hazards. Water, navigation, sand/wind exposure and protected-site access are the key issues.
Selection rationale
The selection is intentionally cautious and mostly candidate-level: Salawusu is the strongest official anchor, while Kubuqi and Yellow River canyon routes need better route-stat and access verification.

1. Salawusu / Dagouwan Desert Grand Canyon
Snapshot
Itinerary
The route follows a public-access section of the Salawusu desert canyon, walking along river bends, canyon walls and dune margins in the area associated with the Ordos Man archaeological landscape. Exact legal access and trailhead must be confirmed.
Why it is essential
Salawusu is the strongest Ordos upland-margin hiking candidate: official sources identify it as a tourist area, Palaeolithic site and major desert valley/canyon landscape.
Equipment
Mountain/desert hiking equipment: sun hat, sunglasses, high water capacity, wind layer, navigation backup.
Hazards and notes
- Heat, flash-flood gullies, loose sand, fragile archaeological/protected land and navigation are key risks.

Kubuqi is the defining desert landscape of northern Ordos and is widely recognised as a desert-trekking area.
Equipment
Desert hiking equipment: high water capacity, sun hat, sunglasses, gaiters optional, GPS, wind layer.

4. Zhungeer Yellow River Grand Canyon Viewpoint Walk
Snapshot
Itinerary
The walk should use marked public paths and viewpoints in the Zhungeer Yellow River Grand Canyon scenic area, staying away from cliff edges and non-public adventure routes.
Why it is essential
The Yellow River canyon is a defining escarpment landscape on the Ordos margin and adds river-cliff terrain to the desert-canyon set.
Equipment
Standard hiking equipment, sun protection.
Hazards and notes
- Some current promotion focuses on “extreme” cliff activities; this catalogue entry should use only normal walking routes.
